34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 Steel

34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 Steel is a heat treatable, low alloy steel, used for a wide range of engineering parts. It is capable of being heat treated to produce a typical tensile strength of 1000 -1200 N/mm² which combined with good ductility and resistance to shock. It also has good hardenability, enabling it to be used for medium tensile strengths in fairly large sections, and attain good wear resistance, good impact property at low temperatures.this material is readily machinable so that the components can be put into service without the cost of further treatment, and also can be supplied in the annealed condition which require hardening and tempering but give increased machinability.it is often supplied in the hardened and tempered condition with hardness 28-34HRC.

Knowing what 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 Steel is, will be an important feat for your business, especially if your business is involved in steel working.

In this guide, we’ll help you understand what 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 steel is. Apart from that, we will also assist you in terms of where you can find the best manufacturer or supplier of this steel too!

What is 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 Steel?

34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 steel is a type of low-alloy steel that contains molybdenum, chromium, and nickel, and is considered to be one of the most popular types of steel.

34crnimo6 steel

This quenching and tempering type of steel yields high levels of strength, toughness, and hardenability. This is the reason why you’ll find use of this type of steel in high-strength requirements.

What Kind of Steel is 4340?

Since AISI 4340 is the equivalent steel of 34CrNiMo6 or the DIN 1.6582 steel, we can therefore conclude that they have similar content.

what kind of steel is 4340 steel

AISI 4340 is a type of chromium-molybdenum-nickel steel that boasts its toughness and its properties of being able to have high levels of strength after its heat-treated. You can also consider it to have excellent fatigue resistance.

How Hard Can You Get 4340 Steel?

You can have your 4340 steels reach up to a total hardness of 600 to 650 HV. Then, you can have it hardened to about 58 HRC or surface hardened to ranges that are within 53 and 55 HRC tempering it at 200 degrees Celsius.

Is 4340 a Carbon Steel?

Alloy steels are designated and known as AISI four (4) digit numbers; meaning, they’re composed of various types of steels that have compositions that encompass Chromium (Cr), Vanadium (V), Silicon (Si), Manganese (Mn), Boron (B), Carbon (C), Molybdenum (Mo), and other for carbon steels.

In a much simpler term, 4340 isn’t a carbon steel – they’re alloy steels, not carbon steels or stainless steels.

Is AISI 4340 the Same as 34CrNiMo6 Steels?

You can say that they’re the same in terms of their alloying elements and their composition.

4340 steel
Structure of what 4340 steels look like

However, they wouldn’t be 100% identical when it comes to the percentage or the content levels of each.

As a matter of fact, this is what makes them unique and special specifically to each standard. They have the same alloying elements, but they’re different in terms of the content structure.

1.6852 Steel Equivalent

Akin to different types of steel, 34CrNiMo6 or 1.6582 steel also has its equivalents in other standards. They include, but are not limited to:

  • ASTM A29:2004
  • BS EN 10250 – 3:2000
  • AISI 4340
  • SAE 4337

NOTE: Again, these steel grades aren’t 100% identical to DIN 1.6582 or 34CrNimo6. They have the same types of alloying elements, and are done in the same procedure, but their contents or their level of elements are different.

34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 Steel Chemical Composition

The chemical composition of the 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 steel is the amount or the percentage of the alloying elements present in it.

34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 steel’s chemical composition is as follows:

  • Carbon (C) – 0.30 to 0.38%
  • Chromium (Cr) – 1.30 to 1.70%
  • Manganese (Mn) – 0.50 to 0.80%
  • Molybdenum (Mo) – 0.15 to 0.30%
  • Nickel (Ni) – 1.30 to 1.70%
  • Sulfur (S) – ≤ 0.035%
  • Silicon (Si) – ≤ 0.40%

The range stands as a type of measurement that will depend on how the client or the customer wants it. There’s never a standard rate or measurement in each 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 steel that’s going to be made or created.

34CrNiMo6 Heat Treatment

Is 34CrNiMo6 heat treatable? Yes, absolutely! You can perform heat treatment on 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 steel in order for it to be harder, tougher, more durable, and stronger.

Heat treatment procedure of steel

As a matter of fact, you can use 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 steel for quenching and tempering, normalizing, annealing, and other types of heat treatment.

The usual procedure of heat treating 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 steel is by slowly heating it to 850 degree Celsius temperature. Then, you would have to soak at this temperature and quench it in oil.

After that, you would need to temper it as soon as the steel reaches room temperature.

NOTE: You need to heat it uniformly in order for it to suit the temperature needed, then, withdraw it from the furnace and let it air-cool.

Can You Use 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6582 Steel to Make Gun Barrels?

Yes, 34CrNiMo6 is one of the types of steels that are commonly used to produce and to create gun barrels.

Gun barrels made out of 34CrNiMo6 steel

The perfect combination of nickel, molybdenum, and chromium truly adds up to the efficiency and the effectiveness of 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6852 steels.

Because of the fact that it has a wide range of strength and toughness, your products will never fail if you use this particular type of steel as your base or your foundation.

34CrNiMo6 Gun Barrels vs. 4150 Gun Barrels

AISI 4150 is known as one of the many types of steel that’s mostly used in the creation of parts and components of firearms – guns, among others.

4150 gun barrels
4150 gun barrels

But, what makes it different from 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6852 steels?

For one, AISI 4150 steels have chromium levels that span between 0.80 and 1.10%, whereas 34CrNiMo6 or DIN 1.6852 steels have chromium levels of 1.30 to 1.70%. What this basically means is that 34CrNiMo6 / 1.6852 steels have a higher rate of wear resistance than 4150 steels.

However, 4150 gun barrels, when put side-by-side with those made from 34CrNiMo6, would be tougher and harder; they’re more difficult to break up.

What is EN24 Material?

EN24 is a type of high strength alloy that’s usually supplied after it has undergone the process of tempering.

en24 material
Sample image of an EN24 material

What EN24 offers is higher levels of tensile strength partnered up with an excellent level of wear and corrosion resistance, as well as ductility and malleability. EN24 is one of the more popular grades of steel because of their machinability that’s automatic to the “T” condition.

Also, they’re part of the most favorites because their surface-hardened condition boasts of up to 58 to 60 HRC.

How Hard is EN24T Steel?

EN24 steels are a popular grade and are usually produced in hardness levels within the ranges of 240 and 302 HB.

It’s a good type or grade of steel, because of its ability to retain moderate levels of impact value even at lower-than-the-usual temperatures. Therefore, you can be sure that you can use EN24T steels in harsh environments and applications.

They would include, but are not limited to:

  • Marine and Maritime Applications
  • Mechanical Handling Equipment
  • Hydraulic Bolts and Tensioners
