M42-high-speed-steel

WALDUN is a top supplier in China for AISI M42 high speed steel. You can get round bar, square bar, flat bar, plate, sheet and wire.

M42 steel (W2Mo9Cr4VCo8) is a high cobalt toughness high speed steel, mainly used for high toughness precision wear resistant hardware cold stamping die, also can be used for cutting tools and knife in the cooling. Steel hardness is high, up to 70HRC, good thermal hardness, high temperature hardness, easy to grind. Cutting tools made of this steel can cut iron-based high-temperature alloys, cast high-temperature alloys, titanium alloys and ultra-high-strength steels, etc. However, the toughness is slightly poor, and the lower limit of temperature should be used when quenching. Because of the good grindability, it can be used to make various high-precision complex tools.

M42 High Speed Steel Forging

Pre heat the AISI M42 with two steps.First, heat slowly and uniformly to 650-760°C with a rate not exceeding 220°C per hour, second, heat more quickly to the forging temperature of 1050-1150°C.Re-heating is necessary when temperature below 850°C. Slow cooling in furnace after forging.

M42 High Speed Steel Annealing

Annealing must be performed after hot working and before re-hardening.Heat the temperature to 770 to 840°C with a rate not exceeding 220°C per hour(one hour per 25mm of thickness),soak for at least two hours. Controlled slow cooling in furnace at 10 to 20°C per hour to approximately 600°C, continue cooling to ambient temperature in the furnace or in air. Hardness after annealing 269Brinell, maximum.

M42 High Speed Steel Stress Relieving

It is recommended to stress relieve after machining and prior to hardening to minimise the possibility of distortion.Heat in a neutral atmosphere to the  temperature of 600 to 650°C, and  soak for approximately two hours, followed by slow cooling in the furnace.M42 can be finish machined before heat treatment.

M42 High Speed Steel Hardening

Pre heat M42 uniformly to 780-840°C, transfer to the hardening furnace, (salt bath or controlled atmosphere furnace recommended) operating at 1170-1200°C, depending on the degree of hardening required for application, and the size of the tool. It is important that the temperature be accurately controlled to avoid overheating. After a short hold at the hardening temperature, quench the component without further soaking into salt at 540-595°C or warm oil. If salt quenched allow the component to equalise at the bath temperature and then complete the quench in still air.

M42 High Speed Steel Tempering

Tempering should be carried out immediately after quenching. Heat slowly and uniformly to the tempering temperature 510-560°C,soak well not less than 2 hours(one hour per 25mm of total thickness).Triple tempering is required. Intermittent cooling, in air, between tempers is required for a minimum of 1 hour. Obtainable hardness of 67 to 69 HRC.

Buying Guide for M42 High Speed Steel

Are you looking for a guide that you can rely onto for purchasing or for buying M42 high speed steel (HSS)? Can’t you find a reliable source that can give you all the information you need to know about it?

If so, then you’re just in the right page at the right time! This buying guide for M42 high speed steel will be detailed and will be tailored to your needs!

Not only will we give you the information you need before purchasing M42 HSS; we will also be telling you a bit about where you can find the best and the most trustworthy M42 high speed steel manufacturing company!

What is M42 High Speed Steel?

M42 is a type of high speed steel that’s part of the molybdenum series that contains about eight (8) to ten (10) percent cobalt in its nature.

You can consider M42 HSS to be one of the most widely used types of metal because of some of its properties, which we’ll be discussing in a later part of this article.

What Does M42 Cobalt Mean?

M42 cobalt is just the same as M42 high speed steel.

is m42 cobalt better than m35 cobalt
M42 cobalt is just the same as M42 high speed steel

The term just rose because of the fact that M42 HSS contains a specific percentage of cobalt, which is responsible for some of the changes and the modifications in the metal.

These changes include, but are not limited to:

  • Changing and modifying the properties of solid solution
  • Increasing hot hardness by elevating melting points
  • Diffusing the mobility of both carbon and tungsten
  • Reducing grain boundary energy
  • Increasing the binding strength
  • And many more!

What is the Composition of M42 High Speed Steel?

The composition of M42 high speed steel contains the following alloying elements:

  • Carbon (1.08%)
  • Silicon (0.45%)
  • Chromium (3.85%)
  • Tungsten (1.50%)
  • Molybdenum (9.50%)
  • Vanadium (1.20%)
  • Cobalt (8.00%)

This is the general element composition of M42 high speed steel. With this in mind, you may find it obvious why some of its properties are what it appears to be…

Properties of M42 Steel

Just like any other type of steel, M42 high speed steel also possesses too few properties that are helpful and advantageous to certain applications.

To help you in purchasing by distinguishing its specifications, here are some of the properties of M42 steel:

  • Critical Temperature: 1,560 degrees Celsius or 849 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Hardness: Up to 68 HRC
  • Austenitizing Temperature: 1,176 degrees Celsius
  • Machinability: 35 to 40% of a 1% carbon steel
  • Specific Gravity: 7.81

When you place it side-by-side with M35, M2, and M7, M42 is the HSS that is considered to be the top when it comes to hot hardness.

*Hot hardness is the assessment or measurement of the hardness when the temperature is increased.

*Toughness-wise, though, M42 ranks at the bottom of it; M42 is the least tough compared to the others.

*M42 high speed steel is also known and deemed to be the best in the measurement of wear resistance. Meaning, it’s the steel that can withstand abrasion and wear more effectively.

Where to Find M42 High Speed Steels For Sale

You will be able to find and locate M42 high speed steels in a wide variety of places.

where to find m42 high speed steels for sale
You will be able to find M42 high speed steels in many different sources and suppliers

For one, you could perform a search over the internet; you’ll be able to find many suppliers and manufacturers of M42 high speed steels in various countries.

However, not being biased but – you will be able to find the best and the highest quality of M42 HSS in China. Why? – Because Chinese M42 high speed steel suppliers find sourcing easy.

M42 Steel Prices and Rates

Prices and rates for M42 steel would differ from one company to another.

In fact, it’ll depend on a few factors, including the amount you’ll be purchasing, the type of steel you would purchase, and the procedures done to produce the steel.

Since M42 steel suppliers and manufacturers perform different processes, the rates and the prices would be different as well.

How to Choose the Right High Speed Steel

In choosing the correct and the best high speed steel, you need to consider some factors.

how to choose the right high speed steels
M42 high speed steels are perfect for aluminum, brass, copper, and stainless applications

Contrary to popular belief, there isn’t a singular product that can meet all the expectations of the client.

For example, you could choose M1, M7, T1, and M2 steels for high speed steels because they have good cutting ability and they have the highest toughness. However, these steels are also known to possess the lowest hot hardness and wear resistance levels out of all HSS tools.

This is when M42 comes in. Since the M42 high speed steel contains about 1.20% V, which you can consider moderate and is eligible to be used for roughing cuts finely and cleanly.

M42 High Speed Steel as Alternative

M42 HSS is also known and deemed to be the perfect alternative for the M2 steel. M42 high speed steel is more often used for hard materials such as brass, aluminum, stainless steels, and the like because it can be run at higher speeds.

You can also see that it heightens saw production life!
