What is T4 Steel?
T4 steel popularly known as AISI T4 steel is a high speed tool steel, a standard of high-speed steel tool materials for ASTM A600. T1 Tool Steel materials are similar to ASTM T4 tool steel but cobalt has increased by 4.25 ~ 5.75% for an improvement in thermal durability.
T4 steel has a red hardness and a higher heat hardness than T1 tool steel. However, before they can be used, T4 tool steel must be produced in the desired form.
They are solid, resistant to wear, machinery and decarburization resistant.
High-speed steels are strong and heavy, but usually have less toughness than cold work tool steels. Some of them, especially M2 and M4 powder metal, are used for cold work due to their strength and wear resistance. In order to qualify as a high-speed steel, certain minimum specifications specified in ASTM A600 High Speed Tool Steels must be fulfilled in the chemical composition.
What is the meaning of AISI and ASTM
T4 steel also belongs to the AISI steels which represent the American Iron and Steel Institute, this explains why AISI is attached to the name of this steel. So don’t be confused when you see AISI or ASTM T5 steel they are the same.
ASTM on the other hand stands for American Society for Testing and Materials. The most commonly used standards for steel products are those published by ASTM in the United States (American Society for Testing and Materials).
ASTM specifications represent a consensus among steel mill products manufacturers, specifications, manufacturers and users. The T represents the Tungsten tool steels while the 4 helps to differentiate the steel type from other models since the steel T series ranges from T1 to T15.

T4 Steel Mechanical Properties
The mechanical properties of T4 tool steels are shown in the table below
Modulus of elasticity | 190-210 GPa |

T4 Steel T4 Steel Forging
There are two phases before heating the AISI T4. Heat steadily at 860-900°C slowly and uniformly at not over 220°C per hour, and heat faster to the 1050-1150°C forging temperature.
When the temperature is below 900°C, reheating is required. After forging, slow cooling in the oven.
T4 Steel Annealing
Annealing after hot work and rehardening must be carried out.
Heat the temperature at a speed of not more than 220°C per hour at 820 to 850°C.
Controlled furnace slow cooling at approx. 550°C at 10 to 20°C an hour, followed by quiet air cooling. After 265 Brinell’s anneal, full hardness.
T4 Steel Stress Relieving
After processing and prior to hardening, stress relief is advised to minimize distortion.
Heat to 600 to 650°C in a neutral atmosphere and soak for about two hours, followed by a gradual cooling in the furnace.
T4 Steel Hardening
Preheat AISI T4 steel slowly to a temperature of 820-870°C, then uniformly heat to 1260-1290°C, accompanied by oil, air quenching, or a warm bath at 550°C.
T4 Steel Tempering
Tempering should be done as soon as possible after quenching.
Heat to the tempering temperature of 560-580oC slowly and evenly, then soak for at least 2 hours (one hour per 25mm of total thickness).
Double tempering is recommended, with a hardness of 64-65 HRC after tempering.
T4 Steel Applications
AISI T4 High-speed tool steel has been commonly used in rough work for cutting tools, broaches and cold extruders.
The following are examples of typical applications:
- Drills,
- Milling Cutters,
- Thread Cutting Tools,
- Knurling Tools,
- Cold extrusion punches
- Broaches etc.
