How to Buy T1 Steel? | T1 Steel Buying Guide
The T1 Steel which also known as AISI/ASTM T1 tool steel is among the popular known and original high-speed tungsten steels. Tungsten is high-quality carbide normally used in hot tooling and high-speed steels.
It is a grey steel metal that increases temperature and red hardness, prevents growth and enhances steel tightness.
Tungsten high-speed tools vary from T1 to T15. The tool steel type T1 focuses on the chemical compound, physical, mechanical and thermal properties and other T1 tool steel classifications.
Before we proceed, I will like to thank you for visiting the Waldun steel manufacturing company websites. WALDUN is one of China’s most successful and trusted T1 steel manufacturers and suppliers. You can get the best quality T1 steels in any of the following categories.
- Round bar
- square bar
- flat bars
- Sheets and wire etc.
Waldun Steel Company offers the best quality steels from T1 to T15 steels and as well as other types of steels you might need for any application.
What is T1 steel or AISI/ASTM T1 steel?
T1 Steel is the most commonly used form of tungsten high-speed steel. It has strong abrasion resistance, high durability, great hardening (62~66HRC). When working temperature is below 600 oC, steel T1 can still maintain the cutting efficiency of cutting tools.
What does T1, AISI and ASTM stand for?
The T simply indicates that we are talking about tungsten tool steels while the 1 helps to identify the steel category properties and the applications. However, the AISI attached to the name is an abbreviation of American Iron and Steel Institute.
Generally, steels with symbol T show that tungsten is the main alloy element while those with symbol M, indicate that molybdenum is the main alloy element.
On the other hand, ASTM simply means the American Society for Testing and Materials. Now, you know why this type of steel is addressed as AISI/ASTM T1 Steel. However, since we have between T1 to T15 steels we are going to find out what differentiates T1 steels from the rest of other T-series steels.
To be able to ascertain what makes the T1 steel different from others is to take a closer look at the Chemical Composition, Physical Properties, Mechanical Properties and Thermal Properties. There different types of steel that are designed for different purposes.
What is the chemical composition of T1 Steel?
Below are the chemical composition of T1 steel which will help you to understand more about the steel and its contents
Element | Content (%) |
C | 0.65-0.80 |
Mn | 0.10-0.40 |
Si | 0.20-0.40 |
Cr | 3.75-4.00 |
Ni | 0.3 |
W | 17.25-18.75 |
V | 0.90-1.30 |
Cu | 0.25 |
P | 0.03 |
S | 0.03 |
What is the Physical Property of T1 Steel?
Below are the physical properties of T1 Steel you should know.
Density | 8.67g/cm3 |
Thermal expansion ( 20-200 °Cmore , untreated) | 9.7 x 10 -6 /ºC |
Thermal conductivity (100 °Cmore , untreated) | 19.9 x W/m-K |
What are the Mechanical Properties of T1 Steel?
You can see the mechanical properties associated with T5 Steel below.
Hardness, Rockwell C | 63.0 – 65.0 |
Poisson’s ratio | 0.27-0.30 |
Elastic modulus | 190-210 GPa |
Thermal Properties
T1 steel has the following thermal properties
Thermal expansion | 9.7 x 10-6/ºC | 20-200 more | |
Thermal conductivity | 19.9 x W/m-K | 100 more |
T1 Steel Forging
There are two phases before heating the AISI T1. In the first step, slowly and evenly heat up to 850-900°C and not exceed 220°C per hour, secondly, faster to 1050-1150°C.
When the temperature is below 950°C, reheating is required. After forging, gradual cooling in the furnace.
T1 Steel Annealing
After hot work and before re-hardening, annealing must be done.
Heat the temperature at no more than 220°C per hour at 850 to 900°C.
Slow regulated furnace cooling at 10-20°C per hour, then cooling in still air, approximately 700°C.
After a flush with 270 Brinell, optimum hardness
T1 Steel Stress Relieving
After processing and before hardening, it is advised to loosen the tension to minimize distortion.
Heat up to 600 to 700 °C in a neutral environment, and soak for about two hours, accompanied by gradual cooling on the burner.
T1 Steel Hardening
T1 steel is very tough and can be hardened by still air cooling.
To reduce decarburization, a salt bath or managed atmosphere furnace is preferred, but if neither is usable, pack hardening in spent pitch coke is recommended.
T1 Steel Tempering
After quenching, tempering should be done immediately.
Temperature heat slowly and evenly soaks well within 2 hours (one hour per 25mm of total thickness). It is advisable to double tempering. The temperature recommended for cutting equipment is 530-580°C. Shock instruments 590-650°C.
